How to Make CBD Oil

In this guide, we will explain various processes so you can understand how to make CBD oil at home. It’s not a complicated process but it does require some attention to detail. Don’t forget any of the steps! Remember to use quality, natural hemp flower no matter what kind of CBD recipe you are making, much like the kind you can get here in bulk or in sample sizes. If you are making edibles or oils, it’s probably a good idea to buy a 1 lb bag of HMP premium CBD flower.

How to Make CBD Oil with Coconut Oil

Here are the ingredients you will need to make CBD oil:

  • 1 oz of dried hemp flower

  • 16 oz of coconut oil

To make these ingredients into CBD oil, you’re going to need common cooking supplies (baking sheet, mason jar) and some not-so-common components (double boiler, cheesecloth).

Cooking Instructions

  1. Grind up the dried hemp until it’s a fine substance.

  2. Preheat your oven to 225 degrees.

  3. Spread the ground hemp flower across the baking sheet, evenly distributed. If you use foil underneath the hemp, then it becomes easier to pour into the double boiler in step 5.

  4. Bake the hemp grounds for an hour. This process is called decarboxylation.

  5. Put water in the lower level of your double boiler and mix the decarboxylated hemp with the oil in the upper bowl. Bring the water to a simmer and let it go for 2-3 hours, and it’s OK if you go long.

  6. Use the cheesecloth to strain out the flower bits so you’re just left with oil. Store it in a mason jar in a cool, dry, dark place.

How to Make CBD Oil with Olive Oil

The process is actually the same as we just explained. All you have to do is follow the steps above and substitute olive oil for coconut oil. They are both carrier oils and can be used interchangeably, depending on preference or availability.

How to Make CBD Oil with Alcohol

The benefit of making CBD oil with alcohol as the extracting agent is many people prefer the taste.

  1. Put the hemp flower buds in a bowl. Immerse them in isopropyl alcohol (this is the solvent) and stir and mash with a wooden spoon for about 5 minutes. Use gloves to continue to break up the buds and to remove big stems.

  2. We recommend a double filter process: first, use a cotton strainer or cheesecloth to filter your concoction as you pour it through a regular strainer with a coffee filter in it with your cooking pot underneath that strainer. This process will probably require multiple coffee filters, depending on the quantity of hemp/alcohol you started with.

  3. (Optional) Some will repeat steps 1 and 2. You will see in your coffee filters that the residue color changes from a brown tint to green. Others think this is overkill and can ruin the quality. Try both methods so you can decide for yourself.

  4. Using a double boiler, pour in the extract. Alcohol boils at 180 degrees Fahrenheit, so this is where the extract decarboxylates. Bring it to a boil and let it simmer for about 30 minutes until the alcohol evaporates.

  5. Once it has cooled, you can transfer the remaining extract using a plastic syringe. Store it in a cool dry place.

Now What to Do with the Oil

You can administer the oil sublingually or make them into gel caps if that is what you prefer. It’s mostly tasteless, but some people do not like the taste and one way to take care of this problem is to just mix it with your food.
